View larger.Innovative Technology for Quick, Reliable Deployment
The FAST Draw relies on Forward Action Spring Technology, or FAST, that was designed exclusively for Gerber and patented by famed Oregon knife maker Butch Vallotton. Butch is known as "Mr. Mechanism" in the custom-knife world, a tribute to his unique designs and exceptional understanding of opening and locking mechanisms. This new, proprietary blade opening concept means that you can deploy your knife quickly and easily using just one hand.
Of course, when a job calls for more deliberate actions, you can also open this knife in the traditional way, using the thumb stud.
Convenient, Safe, and Dependable Over Time
A sharp knife is not only more useful than a dull knife, it's also safer to use. With a strong, sharp blade, you can make the cuts you want quickly and efficiently. That's why Gerber uses a high-carbon stainless steel blade on the FAST Draw. This large, 2.99-inch blade offers a fine-edged cutting surface that can easily be sharpened using standard methods. FAST Draw is the first in a series of knives utilizing "Fast Technonogy." Others include the Mini-Fast, Draw, Aluminum Presto 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, Vallotton, PR2.5 and PR3.0, Convert Fast, Mini Convert Fast, Answer 3.25, Tanto and Drop Point FAST
This drop-point blade, which is stronger than the clip-point style blades used on many pocket knives, fits neatly in the handle when not in use, so you don't have to worry about damaging it or hurting yourself.
The knife is precisely balanced to sit comfortably in your hand and features a glass-filled nylon handle for strength and durability. Texturing on the handle surface ensures a secure grip for improved control.
At just 3.6 ounces, the slim FAST Draw knife is light enough to take with you anywhere. And with the included sturdy pocket clip, you always know right where your knife is.
Gerber's History of Ingenuity
Savvy. Moxie. Craftsmanship. Attention to detail. These are just a few of the company traits that contributed to Gerber's emergence as a world leader in outdoor gear. Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising back in 1910, and one Christmas, he hired a local knife-maker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular, Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939.
For more than half a century, Gerber Legendary Blades has been helping people fend for themselves. Gerber designs popular, dependable tools and knives along with other outdoor gear that helps users accomplish whatever tasks they may be faced with, promoting the lost art of self-reliance.

It's a true one handed knife with a nice little spring assist. Makes a solid CLICK when opening. I use it for everything from slicing a piece of cheese or sharpening a pencil to skinning a deer. Fits perfect in my jeans pocket. The grip is solid , thin and feels great in the hand...I never notice it in my pocket, but I notice it immediately if it's not there..I don't leave home without it. I feel naked when I check it for air travel. Great little pocket knife .
The FAST technology makes it easier to operate to completely one-handed than any other knife I have used. Most knives with thumb studs are easy to open one-handed, but the safety/lock switch makes it easy to close with one hand as well. Initially, it was a little difficult to get it to snap open, but after playing with it a while, it loosened up just a little bit and I developed the proper muscle memory to be able to deploy it quickly and easily.
If I am sitting around at home I often have it in my hand, snapping it open and closed. It's really fun to feel that satisfying snap as the blade flies into it's open position.
It is a VERY right-handed knife. I am able to operate it with my left hand, but with considerable awkwardness, as the safety/lock switch must be manipulated with index or middle finger. Lefties beware.
The blade came razor sharp out of the package, is easy to sharpen, and holds it's edge very well.
It is lightweight. Some folks think the handle material feels "cheap," but It gives good grip and is very lightweight. I don't believe weight=quality, and the plastic handle is very durable. I prefer it to a heavier metal or wood handle.
It is quite small- about the size of a Bic lighter when closed. I like this aspect, but others may not.
Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2024
For the impatient types:
Blade: 2 inches (3/4 of an inch is serrated)
Handle: 3 inches
Extended: 5 1/8 inches
Pros: Very strong release, Serrated blade, Belt-clip, Lock
Cons: Plastic Handle, Hard to open, Lock is hard to use, Belt clip is hard to use, Requires two hands, Serrated Edge wears out fast.
Overall: Good and stylish knife, surpassed expectations but is difficult to use and not long-lasting.
Summary:
The lock must be pushed forward to allow the blade to be "pushed" out. Literally it requires the lock to be held open, then the blade to be pushed out. This defeats the purpose of a spring-knife. You need two hands and by the time you've unlocked it you could have opened a spring-free knife. The handle is plastic and gets scratched easily. The belt-clip is so strong that it is useless.
The knife features a strong, automatic, and fast release spring-operating-system. The release surpassed my expectations and was incredibly fast. If you're looking for self defense this is the speed you want to get. The problem that ruins this release is the safety lock, however. The lock measures exactly 1/2 of a centimeter. The lock is hard to shift. It requires a sliding motion to move it 2 millimeters from SAFE to open. When the lock is shifted to open, a red dot will be visible in the lock. The lock is flimsy and requires much effort to move. After the blade is extended, to close the knife one must push the lock back to "open" and push the blade back. This will require two hands, very difficult to do with one hand as the spring is so strong.
The handle is made of plastic, which disappointed me. It retains any scratches or drop impact done to it; it scratches easily. A few drops on concrete and your handle will become frayed and scratched ("fuzzy" as my brother says).
The belt-clip is made of steel. It has the GERBER name on it and has an upturned end to assist easy clipping. The problem with the belt-clip however, is that it is made of steel. This makes it incredibly hard to clip or open. If you're thinking of clipping this onto your belt or pocket, it won't happen.
The serrated edge features 6 small spikes, these will however be completely gone after a month of moderate use. If you sharpen your knife the serrated edge will become flat and wear away. Not much for durability.
